Brevemente sobre la ESD, como fenómeno
La electricidad estática para mucha gente significa mucho más que una sacudida eléctrica tras pasar por la alfombra o tocar la manilla metálica de la puerta. Hace muchos siglos esta energía eléctrica constituye un serio problema para la industria. Actualmente la mayoría de las empresas ha reconocido el valor del programa de protección de la ESD. Un eficiente sistema creado a tiempo, no tiene un coste demasiado alto, pero a la larga significará ahorros muy considerables, aumentando asimismo la fiabilidad del producto y la reputación de su compañía en el mercado.
Hoy en día la ESD tiene efecto prácticamente en todos los entornos electrónicos sobre la productividad y la fiabilidad del producto. En los últimos decenios, a pesar de los grandes esfuerzos, la ESD sigue influyendo invariablemente en los volúmenes, costes de producción, la calidad y fiabilidad del producto y en la rentabilidad. Según algunos análisis, el coste anual de los fallos producidos por la ESD en la industria de electrónica se aproxima a varios miles de millones de dólares. El coste de los componentes averiados va desde un simple diodo de algunos céntimos hasta los híbridos de varios cientos de dólares. Por los elevados costes de reparación, mecanización, transporte, laboratorio y fabricación hay que perfeccionar el programa de protección de la ESD.
? Pero qué es la ESD? La descarga eléctrica (ESD) es la rápida liberación de la energía eléctrica, originada de la fuente electroestática. Cuando la energía eléctrica entra en contacto con un componente o esté cerca de un componente sensible, puede deteriorar dicho componente. A medida que los componentes sean más pequeños y de funcionamiento más rápido, crece también su sensibilidad. La descarga eléctrica es capaz de modificar las características eléctricas de los semiconductores, disminuir su eficiencia o deteriorarlos por completo. Puede volcar el funcionamiento normal de su sistema electrónico, produciendo errores en su funcionamiento. En áreas limpios, la ESD produce otro tipo de problemas. A las superficies cargadas se adhiere la suciedad, por lo que es muy difícil de retirarla del entorno.
